SPUREN VERWISCHEN – OBSCURE TRACES
Katja Liebmann zeigt in der Galerie Heckenhauer Stadtlandschaften, Portraits und Landschaften – eine Auseinandersetzung mit Aspekten von Zeit, Bewegung und Umgebung. Die Arbeiten der Künstlerin erfassen die Energie, Isolation und Entfremdung städtischen Lebens und vermitteln den Eindruck von Erinnerungen. Oft scheinen mehrere Zeitschichten übereinander zu liegen. Beiläufig aufgenommene Motive scheinen flüchtig – an Zugfenstern vorüberziehende Stadtlandschaften und Landschaften. Die Art der Umsetzung, Belichtung großer Negative auf Büttenpapieren, die blaue Farbe, verleiht den Werken einen eigenen Ausdruckswert. Hierzu gehört die Reminiszenz an die romantische Landschaftsmalerei; sie hebt die Bilder zusätzlich auf eine andere, abstraktere Ebene und erzeugt Distanz. Eine sowohl malerische als auch grafische Anmutung ist den Werken zu eigen.
Bereits seit Mitte der neunziger Jahre beschäftigt sich Katja Liebmann neben Malerei und Druckgrafik mit elementarer Fotografieund der Cyanotypie, einem Druckverfahren aus der Frühzeit der Fotografie – kräftige Aquarellpapiere werden mit lichtempfindlichen Eisensalzen bestrichen, ein Negativ daraufgelegt und in der Sonne belichtet, samtig blau changierende Töne entstehen.
Katja Liebmann ist in Halle an der Saale geboren und aufgewachsen in Berlin. Nach einer Berufsausbildung zur Schriftsetzerin studierte sie Malerei und Druckgrafik an der Akademie der bildenden Künste Nürnberg, an der Kunsthochschule Berlin und am Royal College of Art in London. Heute lebt und arbeitet die Künstlerin in Oldenburg und leitet zudem den Bereich künstlerische Druckgrafik an der dortigen Universität.
Lehraufenthalt an der State University New York, anschließend Lehrtätigkeit am London College of Printing. 1998 Ankauf der Werkgruppe „Gotham City“ durch die Saatchi Collection London, im gleichen Jahr Nominierung für den Citibank Photography Prize, London. 2000 Stipendium der Hasselblad Foundation Göteborg, Schweden mit Ausstellung. Im Jahr danach Ausstellung im Goethe-Institut in London. Seit 2003 Dozentin für Künstlerische Druckgrafik an der Universität Oldenburg.

Katja Liebmann’s solo exhibition at Gallery Heckenhauer shows urban landscapes, portraits and views of nature – an examination of the aspects of time, movement and environment. The artist’s works capture the energy, isolation and alienation of urban life and convey the impression of memories. Layers of time seem to connect. The images that are taken low tech and casually seem fleeting – cityscapes and landscapes are passing by train windows. The way it is implemented – exposing large negatives on handmade paper, the blue color – gives the works their own expressive value. This includes the reminiscence of romantic landscape painting; it also raises the images to another, more abstract level and creates distance.The works have a painterly as well as graphic appearance.
Since the mid-nineties, Katja Liebmann has been working with elementary photography and early photographic printing processes in addition to painting and printmaking; she uses cyanotype, an early photographic process from the days when this medium was invented – strong watercolor paper is coated using light-sensitive iron salts, a negative is placed on it and exposed in the sun, creating velvety blue shimmering tones.
Katja Liebmann was born in Halle an der Saale and grew up in Berlin. After training as a typesetter, she studied painting and printmaking at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg, the Berlin Art Academy and the Royal College of Art in London.Today the artist lives and works in Oldenburg and is also head of the printmaking department at the Oldenburg university.
1995/96 Visiting lecturer at the State University of New York, and the London College of Printing. 1998 Purchase of the series „Gotham City“ by the Saatchi Collection London, in the same year nominated for the Citibank Photography Prize, London. 2000 Scholarship from the Hasselblad Foundation Gothenburg, Sweden with exhibition. The following year exhibition at the Goethe Institute, London.
