Lives and works in Berlin.

Rei Zukidou is a Japanese painter based in Berlin. Born in Japan, spend her childhood in Belgium from the age of 4, she returned to Japan at the age of 11. In between culture differences and languages, she was immersed in visual languages. In 2019, Rei moved to Berlin, Germany, to further her creative process. Her works traverse both the abstract and figurative realms, delving into questions of existence and the intricate relationships between the physical and metaphys ical worlds. In her abstract works, Rei paints intuitively, creating immersive spaces that resonate with the rhythms of natural elements, inviting interplay and leaving room for viewer imagination. By surrendering to the unknown force, sometimes wearing with masks while she paints, she becomes a vessel for intuitive expression, allowing her mark-making to evolve organically from existing colors and fragments into mystical symbols, patterns, and narratives. Rei works intimately with a diverse range of materials—including pencils, oil paint, wood sticks, acrylics, and oil pastels—engaging with the canvas by placing the canvas on the floor, crawl ing on it and using her hands and pencils for painting, creating a tactile connection that enhances her ability to remain in a fluid creative state. In her evocative figurative works, Rei Zukidou shifts her focus to bold, unyielding forms that delve into the intricate and often unsettling complexities of the human condition. With her intuitive brushstrokes, she confronts visceral themes such as violence, power, and the muted voices that reside within us, laying bare the grotesque truths that are often avoided. These works are not merely representations; they embody collective memory and personal experience, reflecting and mirroring the struggles and resilience that define the human spirit while weaving in a broader dialogue about the power of acknowledging discomfort and em bracing the totality of the human experience. T he interplay between Rei’s abstract and figurative expressions is intrinsic to her artistic vision. While her abstract works tap into the universal rhythms of nature and the unconscious, her figurative paintings serve to ground these explorations in the essence of being. Together, they create a dialogue that deepens the funda mental question of existence itself. writing : Edgar. D
